		It is amazing to see that over the last 45 years the NCT has been at the forefront in every improvement in maternity care in Britain.  Did you know for instance that because of the NCT Husbands/partners are now allowed to attend the birth. There has been a significant halt in the rise of unnecessary caesareans and inductions. Maternity care is more women centred - they have better access to midwives antenatally and are allowed to have more of a say in the way their babies are born. There has been a sizeable reduction in the number of episiotomies. The bonding process between mother/father and child is respected.  Babies are given to mothers as soon as they are delivered, there is much more support for breastfeeding, policies such as rooming-in means that a mother has 24 hour access to her baby and visiting hours for fathers aren't limited. As well as campaigning nationally the NCT has over 380 local branches providing information and support for all parents.  This not only includes ante natal classes but also other important services - breastfeeding counselling, post natal support groups, discussions groups, local neighbourhood contacts, social events, support groups for working mothers and parents of twins, networks for parents facing particular challenges or traumatic experiences and bring and buy sales of good quality second hand baby equipment and toys.  All of these groups and services are run by members on a voluntary basis and though some services are charged for the majority are free and available to all parents in the local area. For the last 45 years the NCT has been educating and campaigning on behalf of generations of parents so that in 2002 we can enjoy significantly better maternity care than our parents experienced.  However the work of the NCT continues as there are still many more improvements to maternity care needed.  Therefore we are asking you to complete the membership form or call 0870 990 80 40, quoting branch number 584, and become a member of the NCT.  Please ensure that the valuable legacy you have already received will continue into the future so that when your children decide to become parents even more improvements in maternity care will have been achieved.
